ASWB 2026 FAQ: Every Question Test-Takers Are Asking Right Now
As August 3, 2026 approaches, we've been hearing the same questions from candidates over and over. This post is our attempt to answer all of them in one place, clearly and completely. Bookmark it and share it with anyone you know who is preparing for their social work licensing exam.
General Questions About the 2026 Changes
When do the new exam changes take effect?
The updated exam launches on Monday, August 3, 2026. If you test before that date, you will take the current (2018 blueprint) exam. If you test on or after that date, you will take the new (2026 blueprint) exam. See the full ASWB 2026 changes page.
How many questions will be on the 2026 ASWB exam?
The 2026 exam will have 122 total questions — 110 scored operational questions and 12 unscored pretest questions. The current exam has 170 total questions (150 scored + 20 pretest). The four-hour time limit stays the same.
How many content areas will the 2026 exam cover?
Three content areas, down from four. The consolidation was based on findings from ASWB's 2024 Practice Analysis, which identified significant redundancy in the current four-area structure.
Will the passing score change?
The passing standard is being reset through a standard setting workshop conducted by psychometricians from Pearson VUE, involving a diverse panel of more than 75 social work practitioners. The new passing score will be calibrated to represent minimum competence on the 2026 exam — it will not simply be the same number as before. ASWB has not yet published the new passing standard as of this writing. Check the ASWB website for updates.
Will exam fees change?
No. Exam fees are not changing with the 2026 update.
Content and Preparation Questions
What content areas does the new 2026 ASWB exam cover?
The new exam is organized around three content areas, with values and ethics carrying the highest proportion of questions. The full blueprints are available in Appendix D of the 2024 Analysis of the Practice of Social Work, downloadable for free from ASWB's website.
Will the questions be harder?
The questions will be different rather than strictly harder. The 2026 exam emphasizes applied knowledge — case vignettes and scenario-based reasoning — over straightforward recall questions. Many candidates with strong clinical thinking skills find this format more aligned with their abilities.
Can I still use my current study materials?
It depends. If your materials are based on the 2018 blueprints and you're testing before August 3, they are still appropriate. If you're testing after August 3, you need materials that reflect the 2026 content outlines and the applied knowledge framework. Look for providers that have explicitly updated their materials for the 2026 exam.
Is there a new practice test?
Yes. ASWB has released a new version of the Online Practice Test aligned with the 2026 blueprints. There are currently two versions available — one for candidates testing before August 3, and one for candidates testing after. ASWB recommends waiting until you have a scheduled appointment before purchasing to ensure you get the correct version.
Scheduling and Logistics Questions
Will it be harder to get an appointment after August 3?
Potentially. ASWB has explicitly warned that appointment availability at Pearson VUE testing centers on and after August 3 may be limited due to high demand. They recommend scheduling as early as possible.
What if my state approval expires before August 3?
If your state or provincial authorization expires before August 3, you will need to test under the current format or reapply for authorization (which may come with additional fees and processing time). Contact your state licensing board directly to confirm your specific deadlines.
Where can I find the most current information?
Always go directly to www.aswb.org for the most current and authoritative information. ASWB will be releasing additional resources, including the updated Examination Guidebook, in the months leading up to August 3.
